FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
INSURER CONTINUES NATIONAL PATTERN OF DENYING RESTITUTION TO CHILD SEX ABUSE SURVIVORS
NEW YORK – The Diocese of Trenton filed a lawsuit accusing insurance giant CHUBB, its subsidiaries, and other insurance companies of refusing to pay out claims in sexual abuse cases brought against the Diocese under the New Jersey Child Victims Act. The lawsuit is the latest legal issue for CHUBB, which has engaged in a national pattern of refusing to pay out thousands of child sexual abuse claims in an attempt to protect its record profits.
This move from CHUBB follows similar actions across the country in cases involving religious institutions like the Archdiocese of New York and the Archdiocese of San Francisco, hospitals like Rockefeller University Hospital, school districts like the Los Angeles Unified School District, and others.
In response to the latest lawsuit against CHUBB, the Coalition for Just and Compassionate Compensation (“CJCC”) – an independent alliance of survivors of child sexual abuse, their representatives, and advocates seeking full restitution for child sexual abuse survivors – issued the following statement:
“At this point, we know Chubb’s playbook like the back of our hand: deny coverage, delay restitution, and let survivors die waiting for justice,” said David Catalfamo, Executive Director of the CJCC. “Just last month, their CEO bragged about 2024 being their ‘best year ever’, earning more than $9.27 billion in net income. Meanwhile, survivors are left waiting for the compensation they’re entitled to. The actions in Trenton are the latest example highlighting Chubb’s utter disregard for their clients and for survivors of child sexual abuse.”
