FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INSURER CONTINUES NATIONAL PATTERN OF DENYING RESTITUTION TO CHILD SEX ABUSE SURVIVORS

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Unified School District filed a lawsuit Monday accusing insurance giant CHUBB, its subsidiaries and other insurance companies of wrongfully refusing to defend and indemnify the district from sex-abuse claims filed by former students against district employees. The lawsuit is the latest in a troubling pattern for CHUBB, which has engaged in a national pattern of refusing to pay out thousands of child sexual abuse claims in an attempt to protect its record profits.

This move from CHUBB in Los Angeles follows similar actions across the country in cases involving the religious institutions like the Archdiocese of New York, Archdiocese of San Francisco, hospitals like Rockefeller University Hospital, school districts, and others.

In response to CHUBB’s latest maneuver, the Coalition for Just and Compassionate Compensation (“CJCC”) – an independent alliance of survivors of child sexual abuse, their representatives, and advocates seeking full restitution for child sexual abuse survivors – issued the below statement:

“Unfortunately, this is just the latest in a string of Chubb’s bad faith efforts to evade their obligations as insurers, once again delaying justice for child sexual abuse survivors,” said David Catalfamo, Executive Director of the CJCC. “This latest example demonstrates Chubb’s utter disregard for their clients and for survivors of child sexual abuse – all in the name of protecting their record-breaking profits. It’s clear that Chubb would rather survivors receive either a fraction of what they deserve or no restitution at all, as long as it protects their bottom line.”
