LATEST CHUBB MANEUVER DEMONSTRATES NATIONAL PATTERN TO DENY RESTITUTION TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE SURVIVORS
NEW YORK, NY (February 8th) – This week, CHUBB Insurance filed a lawsuit in New Jersey federal court claiming that it does not have an obligation to cover more than 200 sexual abuse claims in cases involving the Diocese of Trenton. The lawsuit is yet another example in a national campaign to deny paying out thousands of child sexual abuse claims in an attempt to protect CHUBB’s record profits. CHUBB’s latest maneuver in New Jersey follows similar actions across the country in cases involving the Archdiocese of New York, Archdiocese of San Francisco, and Rockefeller University Hospital, among others.
In response to the lawsuit, the Coalition for Just and Compassionate Compensation (“CJCC”) – an independent alliance of survivors of child sexual abuse, their representatives, and advocates seeking full restitution for child sexual abuse survivors – issued the below statement:
“Chubb is executing a national strategy of evading responsibility and delaying justice – and it’s harming child sexual abuse survivors right before our very eyes,” said David Catalfamo, Executive Director of the CJCC. “It’s ironic that the Chubb subsidiary named in this suit is called ‘Century Indemnity Co.’ when, in fact, their entire strategy is to indemnify themselves at the expense of child sexual abuse survivors. This lawsuit is yet another attempt to protect Chubb’s record profits by delaying cases for years and forcing their clients into bankruptcy, all but ensuring that survivors will either receive pennies on the dollar or never receive restitution at all.”
